After a long-fought season, the Kansas City Chiefs have come out victorious in Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers. With a nerve-racking overtime game ending with a score of 25-22, the Chiefs successfully finished their playoff run, capping off the 2023-2024 NFL season. With this Super Bowl, the Chiefs have won their franchise’s sixth Super Bowl title, tying them up with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots as the franchises with the most Super Bowl wins.

The road for both teams leading up to the Super Bowl had not been easy, with anticipating games in the Conference Championships. The Chiefs battled it out against the Baltimore Ravens, who had the MVP in Lamar Jackson, and the 49ers matched up against the explosive offense of the Detroit Lions.

In the regular season, the 49ers had a record of 12-5, putting them at the top of their division, along with the Chiefs who had a record of 11-6. The Niners blew past the regular season with ease, and throughout the season, they had already been the Super Bowl favorites. Unlike the Niners, the Chiefs had some struggles throughout the regular season. The Chiefs started the season hot with a 6-1 record, but as the weeks went by, they faced struggles, leading to an 8-5 record through week 13.

The Chiefs’ struggles were mostly in their wide-receiver position, with their wide-receiver one being rookie Rashee Rice, and their second and third being Kadarius Toney and Mecole Hardman Jr..

Despite not having any superstars at one of the most important positions in football, the Chiefs still defined all the odds and proved everyone wrong by winning Super Bowl LIV.

“I believe that the Chiefs are now a dynasty, and they could possibly become one of the greatest if they keep up the Super Bowl wins,” senior Luke Jenson said.

The game started very slowly, with the score being 0-0 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams’ defenses was the highlight of the first quarter, leaving both teams scoreless, and leaving both teams with a fumble.

The second quarter was a different story for the Niners, as it seemed that they would pick up the pace, scoring ten points, to the Chiefs’ three. Christian McCaffery scored the Niners’ first touchdown, giving them the lead.

The third quarter is when the Chiefs turned on the jets. They went on and scored ten points, while also playing great defense, keeping the Niners scoreless for the quarter, making the score 13-10 in the Chief’s favor.

The fourth quarter led to both teams tied at 19-19, leading them to enter overtime, the second in Super Bowl history. Entering overtime, to the shock to many, the Niners decided to receive the ball first, giving the Chiefs a chance to score no matter what. The Niners scored in overtime with a field goal, giving them a three-point advantage, but it wasn’t enough to promise them the victory.

With six seconds left on the clock, quarterback Patrick Mahomes passed the game-winning touchdown to receiver Hardman Jr, giving them the win, with the final score being 25-22.

“I feel amazing. It was a great game-winning drive by Pat,” senior Trent Jurado, a long-time Chiefs fan said. “The overtime game-winning drive was my favorite part of the game; it was definitely goat-worthy, that’s all, three-peat coming soon.”

With this win, Mahomes won his third ring, making him one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
